The volumetric weight is billed: the box is large for its weight.

Volumetric weight 16 × 12 × 8 ÷ 139 = 11.05 lb

  • Measure the box, not the item: the longest side first, then the other two, including any bulges.
  • Carriers round differently: USPS, UPS and FedEx in the US round up to a whole pound, DHL Express rounds up in 0.5 kg steps. Exact values are shown here.
  • The divisor can differ by contract, country or service. The shipping calculator or the carrier’s rate card gives the exact billable weight.

Why it matters

  • A light but large box

The carrier bills the greater of the two weights. A pillow or a lampshade in a big box is paid by its size, not its kilograms.

  • A smaller box ships for less

Trim a few centimetres off the box and its volumetric weight can drop by a kilogram or more.
